Klankvorm is a Rotterdam-based platform for the realisation and presentation of experimental audiovisual art. Klankvorm events take place in different locations and feature audiovisual performances and related presentations by participating artists. Klankvorm aims to initiate, commission, and present new works by sound artists and visual artists who collaboratively explore the audiovisual domain.

The first edition of Klankvorm will take place at V2_ on the 19th of May. This new series of nightly ventures promotes and initiates novel collaborations between sound and visual artists. The programme features exciting, radical and explorative audiovisual performances. At Klankvorm #1 we present three Dutch premieres consisting of analog, digital and laser projections accompanied by electronic sound structures.

Joost Rekveld + Andrey Smirnov

Saåad + Klara Ravat

Tijs Ham + Birk Nygaard - Refract / Recurse

As a continuation of a recent audiovisual improvisation, Andrey Smirnov and Joost Rekveld started a new collaboration inspired by ‘Stigmergy’. This concept defines the stimulation of workers through the results they’ve accomplished. It relates to the chemical traces which regulate the activities of social insects such as ants, termites and bees, allowing for communication. Based on this principle Rekveld and Smirnov developed systems which generate images and sound which are used to create a new live composition.

Saåad use layered field recordings to create deep drone and ambient compositions. Klara Ravat is an olfactory artist and experimental filmmaker creating dreamlike images, often accompanied by scent. In their performance the sounds by Saåad are combined with analogue 16mm projections by Ravat.

‘Refract / Recurse’ is an audiovisual performance by Tijs Ham and Birk Nygaard. The project combines scattered laser projection and live electronics, consisting of feedbacking analog mixers. Together they generate musical landscapes and shimmering lights. The laser beams are refracted, lighting up the space in a hypnotizing pulse while the music slowly builds up to an all encompassing sonic wave.

The second edition of Klankvorm will take place on the 15th of June in the century old cinema now known as KINO Rotterdam. KINO is the perfect venue to present immersive live cinema projects. For this edition SHXCXCHCXSH and filmmaker Pedro Maia will present the Dutch premiere of their collaborative project, and Davide Carbone will present his Honzo project in collaboration with media artist and filmmaker Nan Wang.

Honzo (D. Carbone) + Nan Wang

SHXCXCHCXSH is the mysterious duo from Sweden exploring the darker and more experimental realms of techno. Labeled as one of the most unique projects in today’s electronic music, SHXCXCHCXSH blend elements of noise, glitch, drone, broken beat and heavy industrial into subtle and transcendent soundscapes. Klankvorm is proud to host the Dutch premiere of their collaboration with Portugese filmmaker Pedro Maia, known for his exploration of analogue film. Based on 16mm film footage, damaged by the passage of time, the experience of cinema is brought back to its bare essentials: light and movement.

Davide Carbone is known for his distorted, drony and hallucinatory techno music. The Honzo project was born out of Carbone’s interest in human psychology (primary emotions such as fear, anger and sadness) and desire to reveal the bipolarity of his music. The performance is characterised by submerged futuristic breakbeats, haunting cinematic soundscapes and modulations. For this collaboration media artist, designer and filmmaker Nan Wang joins Carbone on stage to reimagine her work ‘Dust Poetry’, 7000 frames of dust and black and white analog 16mm footage of plants and insects.
